Can You Shower or Sleep With Silver Jewelry?

We recommend removing silver jewelry before your daily shower. A brief splash of clean water will not normally ruin a silver ring immediately. Regular showering also exposes it to shampoo, body wash and moisture. Gold plating, stone settings or pearls may need more careful handling than the silver itself.

This applies to 925, 990 and 999 silver. These numbers tell you the silver content; they do not mean the piece is waterproof. Read our comparison of 925, 990 and 999 silver for the material differences.

Can you sleep with silver jewelry on?

Taking it off at night is usually the simpler option. Necklaces can twist or catch on hair and clothing. Rings and bracelets are also exposed to movement and friction. 990 and 999 silver are generally softer than 925 sterling silver, so take particular care with open or adjustable designs.

Store each piece separately in a dry place. Our jewelry care guide explains how to clean and store different materials.

What if your silver jewelry gets wet?

Take it off and gently dry it with a soft cloth, including clasps and small gaps. If it came into contact with soap, chlorine or salt water, check the care instructions for the whole piece, especially if it is gold-plated or contains stones or pearls.

For frequent water contact, explore pieces specifically marked as waterproof. If you prefer genuine silver, browse our 925, 990 and 999 silver jewelry and check the materials listed on each product page.

Quick answers

Can I wash my hands while wearing a 925 silver ring?
An occasional splash is usually no cause for concern. Dry the ring and your skin afterward, and consider any stones or coating.

Can I wear 999 silver all the time?
Its higher silver content does not make it waterproof. It is also comparatively soft, so protect it from pressure and heavy friction.
